The Hammerhead Karoo 3

Our Rating

The Hammerhead Karoo 3 is a modern GPS bike computer aimed at road, gravel and mountain bike riders. Its 3.2-inch touchscreen remains easy to read in sunlight. Multi-band GNSS ensures precise navigation, providing reliable positioning even in challenging environments. Features such as CLIMBER, which automatically detects climbs, make it particularly appealing for sporty rides. Our Hammerhead Karoo 3 review also highlights its powerful hardware, with a quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and extensive connectivity (Bluetooth, ANT+, Wi-Fi). The battery lasts up to 15 hours, and the casing has IP67 protection, making it ideal for longer rides in changing conditions.

The Hammerhead Karoo 3* is a premium GPS bike computer that stands out above all for its large 3.9-inch touchscreen, high resolution and excellent colour reproduction. With a robust case, a battery life of around 12 hours and precise multi-GNSS navigation, the Karoo 3 is primarily aimed at ambitious cyclists and technology enthusiasts who value detailed maps and extensive customisation options. The touchscreen provides intuitive operation, complemented by physical buttons for reliable control even in challenging conditions.

The device is ideal for users who prefer comprehensive data visualisation and versatile controls, even though this makes the Karoo 3 somewhat larger and heavier than comparable models. Compared with more compact devices, it scores points with highly detailed maps and numerous smart features, such as integrated Strava Live Segments and extensive app support. However, its price of around 500 euros is considerably higher, narrowing its appeal mainly to experienced riders and technology enthusiasts. Features such as crash detection are also absent here, but overall the Karoo 3 offers a powerful combination of a large display, precision and customisation.

Measuring around 10.3 cm x 6.2 cm x 2.0 cm and weighing approximately 118 grams, the Hammerhead Karoo 3 is one of the more compact yet robust bike computers on the market. Its 3.2-inch display provides a generous, high-resolution view for detailed maps and clearly arranged data fields. Design and build quality

Even while unboxing it for the  Hammerhead Karoo 3 review , the high build quality is immediately apparent. The case has been subtly redesigned and looks a little more angular than the Karoo 2, but it still feels comfortable in the hand. At just 118 g, the Karoo 3 is featherlight, particularly compared with some significantly heavier competitors.

The aluminium back not only feels premium but also impressed in the  Hammerhead Karoo 3 test  with effective heat dissipation at high display brightness. Overall, the first impression is clear: the Karoo 3 combines thoughtful design with solid build quality.

The new  buttons with improved tactile feedback  respond precisely, even with gloves—a clear improvement over the Karoo 2. However, the buttons do not feel quite as premium as those on Wahoo or Garmin devices, for example. The mount remains Garmin-compatible with the included adapter.

One thing that really bothers me about the Hammerhead Karoo 3 is the extremely loud built-in beeper. If you also use a Garmin Varia radar in heavy traffic, it can quickly drive you mad during a ride—at least that was my experience. Unfortunately, the volume cannot be adjusted because the Karoo 3 does not have a proper speaker. There is at least one solution: mute the bike computer, and you finally get some peace.
Update 23.06.2025: Hammerhead has improved this with a software update, and the beeper is now much more tolerable.

The display

The display is undoubtedly a real highlight of the Hammerhead Karoo 3 review. The 3.2-inch colour touchscreen, with a resolution of 480 × 800 pixels, impresses across the board: it is pin-sharp, vibrant and remains exceptionally readable even in direct sunlight. Gorilla Glass protects it, providing both high scratch resistance and a pleasant feel when operating the screen.

Thanks to the integrated ambient light sensor, brightness adjusts automatically to the lighting conditions—and this worked reliably and without delay in the test. Whether in bright sunshine, shade or twilight, the display always provides an excellent view of all your data. The smooth, precise touchscreen response was particularly impressive, even with thin cycling gloves. The Karoo 3 can also be operated using side buttons, which is a real advantage in wet conditions or on rough terrain. In practice, the combination of touch and button controls works exceptionally well.

Unlike many other bike computers, Hammerhead deliberately uses an LCD display in the Karoo 3 that makes no compromise between readability and battery life. On the contrary, it proves that the two can work very well together. The clearly designed data fields deserve particular mention: they are effortless to read at any time, a major benefit for anyone who needs to glance at their data during training or racing. The Karoo 3 display sets a benchmark in its class and is among the best currently available on GPS bike computers.

Display readability in direct sunlight

In my current Hammerhead Karoo 3 test, I filmed the display at full brightness (100%) in direct sunlight, and the result is thoroughly convincing. Even in bright sunshine, the screen remains pin-sharp and exceptionally readable. This shows how carefully the Karoo 3 display has been designed, making it ideal for demanding rides in any weather. Anyone looking for a premium GPS bike computer should definitely consider the Hammerhead Karoo 3. Here is the video:

Navigation and GPS performance

The Hammerhead Karoo 3 navigation impressed across the board in the test. This is thanks to its integrated multi-band GNSS module, which processes signals from GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and QZSS satellites. It provides particularly accurate positioning, even in dense woodland or urban environments with numerous sources of interference. A GPS fix takes less than ten seconds, allowing a quick start without a long wait. A barometric altimeter also provides precise elevation readings and works significantly more reliably than GPS-based elevation measurement alone.

Another advantage is the flexible route planning: routes can be created directly on the device or synced through the companion app for Android and iOS. Worldwide maps come preinstalled and are free to use. Turn-by-turn navigation is particularly convenient, providing visual and audible instructions. If you leave the planned route, automatic rerouting guides you back onto the right track.

In practice, the route guidance excels with high precision and well-structured offline maps that receive regular updates. A real highlight is the yellow directional arrows displayed continuously along the route. They are easy to recognise, even at high speeds or during a quick glance at the display, and make orientation much easier. Overall, the Karoo 3 proves to be an exceptionally reliable and user-friendly companion for demanding cycling navigation.

If you leave the route,  automatic rerouting takes over. In the test, this worked  very reliably and quickly most of the time. The new route is shown  in red , making it clearly distinguishable from the original route in yellow.  In isolated cases , however, the system suggested  unnecessary detours  instead of simply guiding me back to the planned route.

Despite minor weaknesses, the Karoo 3 navigation remains among the best on the market: clear, thoughtfully colour-coded and practical to use.

Testing the Hammerhead Karoo 3 Climb feature

The Climb feature is one of the highlights of the Hammerhead Karoo 3 test, especially for cyclists who love the mountains:

  • Climbs are  detected automatically, even without a planned route.
  • The display previews the climb with a  colour gradient based on gradient, length, current position, remaining elevation gain and time on the climb.
  • The feature helps you  pace your effort  and tackle climbs with a plan.
  • With a planned route, the Karoo shows all upcoming climbs in advance, including their names (if known), lengths and elevation profiles.
Hammerhead Karoo 3: testing the Climb feature
Hammerhead Karoo 3: testing the Climb feature

Compared directly with Garmin, the Hammerhead Karoo 3 Climb feature feels considerably more modern and user-friendly. Climbs are not only displayed more attractively but are also more intuitive to read, with no advance setup required because the feature is enabled automatically.

The turn instructions also set a high standard: the Karoo 3 turn-by-turn navigation is exceptionally reliable, with clear, high-contrast displays. Street names, directional arrows and the remaining distance to the next turn are shown in a clear layout. You can also enable audible instructions that use a subtle beep to draw attention to upcoming turns.

Particularly useful is how quickly the system detects route deviations and automatically starts recalculating, allowing you to keep riding smoothly. Alternatively, navigation can be used entirely without turn instructions—ideal if you prefer following the map or a GPX track. In this case, the map stays centred on your route without actively redirecting you. This flexibility makes the Hammerhead Karoo 3 an ideal companion for a wide range of riding styles and navigation needs.

Software & Karoo OS

The Hammerhead Karoo 3* runs Karoo OS, an Android-based operating system that regularly receives new features and improvements. The interface is clearly structured, intuitive to use and highly adaptable to individual needs. The flexible layout is particularly useful day to day: each page can display up to 12 data fields, which can be freely arranged using drag and drop.

The Karoo 3 also integrates seamlessly with popular platforms such as Strava, Komoot, TrainingPeaks, RideWithGPS and many others. The Climb feature automatically detects upcoming climbs and clearly displays their gradients and profiles, without requiring manual activation. Training features are well covered too: workouts, training zones and interval sessions are fully supported, making the Karoo 3 appealing to ambitious athletes as well.

In our Hammerhead Karoo 3 test, the software remained stable and smooth throughout, even on longer rides with active navigation, connected sensors and Strava Live Segments running. Karoo OS therefore delivers a thoroughly reliable and modern user experience at a very high level.

Battery life under extreme testing

Limited battery life was a frequently mentioned criticism of the Hammerhead Karoo 2, particularly on longer rides. Hammerhead has made noticeable improvements with the Karoo 3, and these were also clearly evident in practical testing. Up to 15 hours of runtime are now possible in standard mode, while battery saver mode can deliver up to 30 hours. New power-saving features contribute to this, including automatic display dimming, adaptive brightness control and selectively disabling communication modules that are not needed.

The automatic brightness control was particularly impressive in the test, responding quickly and reliably to changing light conditions. No manual adjustment was needed at any point, which improves usability while also saving energy. The device charges through a USB-C port, but support for external battery systems such as the Garmin Charge Pack is still absent—a small disadvantage, particularly for ultra-distance riders.

Hammerhead Karoo 3 battery drain test
Hammerhead Karoo 3 test: battery drain under full load!

As part of my practical test, I checked battery life under realistic conditions. After almost an hour of riding—57 minutes and 49 seconds, to be precise—the battery still showed 88%, equivalent to a drain of around 12.45% per hour. That would correspond to a maximum runtime of approximately 8 hours. It is important to note that the test deliberately simulated a worst-case scenario: display brightness remained at 100%, and several devices were connected simultaneously, including a Wahoo Trackr Radar, a Garmin watch and power meter pedals.

Under less demanding conditions, such as medium display brightness and fewer paired sensors, the actual runtime is likely to be much closer to the 15 hours claimed by Hammerhead. Overall, the Karoo 3 shows a clear improvement in battery life over its predecessor, providing sufficient reserves for longer rides too.

Sensors & connectivity

The Hammerhead Karoo 3 also impresses in terms of connectivity: it is fully compatible with ANT+, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and supports almost all common sensors. These include heart rate monitors—both traditional chest straps and third-party optical sensors—as well as speed and cadence sensors. Power meters, including dual-sided measurement and Torque Effectiveness data, are also detected and integrated without difficulty.

The Karoo 3 is particularly versatile when integrating e-bike systems such as Shimano STEPS or Bosch, clearly displaying battery level, assistance level and other data. It also offers comprehensive integration with SRAM AXS components, including the selected gear, gear shifts and component battery status directly on the screen.

Modern radar systems such as the Garmin Varia also connect seamlessly to the Karoo 3. Traffic approaching from behind is displayed clearly on the screen in real time. Update dated 16.07.2025: In a further test, the new WAHOO TRACKR Radar also worked flawlessly with the Karoo 3—another demonstration of this bike computer's high compatibility and flexibility.

Display live headwind data

Display live wind data on the Hammerhead Karoo 3 with MyWindsock integration

The Hammerhead Karoo 3 can show current wind data while you ride, helping you adapt your effort to the wind conditions. Combined with the popular third-party service MyWindsock, it provides detailed information on wind direction, wind speed and their effect on your pace, directly on your bike computer's display. This is not a real-time measurement like the wind sensor on the Wahoo Elemnt Ace, but rather a guide. We tested the wind data and compared it with the ACE. The differences were genuinely minimal, and the wind speed readings often matched even while riding.

Strava Live Segments

The Hammerhead Karoo 3 is one of the most advanced GPS bike computers on the market, particularly when it comes to Strava Live Segments. With seamless Strava Live integration, the Karoo 3 lets ambitious cyclists compete with other riders in real time, improve personal bests and track their training progress precisely while riding. I have owned many bike computers, but none has managed to display Live Segments so elegantly and clearly.

Hammerhead Karoo review: Strava Live Segments

Strava Live Segments work significantly better on the Hammerhead Karoo 3 than on many competing devices, and there are good reasons for this. The powerful hardware is particularly important: with a quad-core processor and 4 GB of RAM, the Karoo 3 delivers exceptionally fast performance. This enables extremely quick segment detection and a lag-free display of all relevant live data, even with intensive use of multiple sensors and complex map views.

Another highlight is the brilliant 3.2-inch touchscreen, which displays Strava segments with pin-sharp resolution and excellent readability. Whether in bright sunlight or twilight, information such as the segment start, real-time ranking, time gaps and power data remains clearly visible. Particularly useful is the ability to customise the segment data display so that users see exactly the values that matter to them, such as power, heart rate, cadence or their current time advantage.

The Karoo 3 also leads the way in connectivity: with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an optional LTE connection through a smartphone, the device stays permanently connected to Strava. Segments sync automatically, and results are uploaded as soon as a segment is completed, without delays or manual intervention.

Visual and audible notifications provide extra motivation while riding: the device lets you know when you beat a personal best or overtake another athlete. This real-time interaction is motivating and gives each segment an added appeal. After the ride, users benefit from comprehensive analysis, including segment traces, comparison times and personal records, directly through the Strava integration.

Compared directly with devices from Garmin, Wahoo and other manufacturers, the Hammerhead Karoo 3 stands out above all for its successful combination of powerful hardware, a high-quality display, intuitive operation and deep Strava integration. For anyone looking to maximise performance on Live Segments and keep a perfect view of their data in real time, the Karoo 3 is arguably the best solution currently on the market.

Connecting Shimano Di2

Unfortunately, Shimano has blocked SRAM's access to DI2, so a direct connection is not possible without an additional extension. But there is no need to worry: a simple solution lets you quickly integrate it with the Hammerhead Karoo 3.

  • You can even change the Di2 system's shifting modes through the Karoo menu, if enabled
  • You can change pages using your DI2 buttons

Profiles

On the Hammerhead Karoo 3, profiles are customised riding modes or settings tailored to different cycling scenarios. They define  which data fields, sensors, map views and training features are displayed and used during a ride.

A road cycling training profile can, for example, have very different priorities from a bikepacking or mountain biking profile.

What profiles can you create?

You can create as many profiles as you like—the Karoo 3 is pleasingly flexible here. Examples include:

  • Road cycling training: focus on performance, watts, heart rate, lap times and Strava segments.
  • Gravel rides: clear map view, elevation profile, compass and weather data.
  • MTB rides: strong focus on elevation gain, speed and technical trails.
  • Commuting: simple navigation, battery consumption and traffic data.
  • Indoor trainer: smart trainer connection, with a focus on watts, cadence and time.

What are profiles useful for?

The main advantage is  versatility and clarity. Instead of painstakingly setting up new data fields for every ride, you simply select the right profile and are ready to go. This keeps your focus on the ride rather than the device. The feature is especially valuable for ambitious training or longer rides.

Profiles can also be customised with  layouts, numbers of pages and custom views  to suit their purpose and your personal preferences.

Smart features & notifications

Smartphone notifications (WhatsApp, calls and SMS) appear directly on the display.  Operation is straightforward and unobtrusive, and the companion app lets you choose exactly which notifications get through.

You can also  control music apps on your smartphone, which is particularly useful on longer rides.

Analysis & app connectivity

Rides can sync automatically with Strava, Komoot, TrainingPeaks or Apple Health. On-device analysis is clearly presented but offers less depth than Garmin. Hammerhead makes up for this with:

  • A clearly organised app with a ride archive
  • Export in .FIT and .GPX
  • Automatic uploading when connected to Wi-Fi

What can the Hammerhead app do?

The app acts as a  link between your smartphone and the Karoo 3. Its main features fall into three categories:

  1. Device management & Synchronisation
    • Automatic synchronisation of recorded activities with platforms such as  Strava,  Komoot,  TrainingPeaks  and many more.
    • Firmware updates, settings and remote device management.
    • Profiles, maps and planned routes can be sent to the Karoo through the app.
  2. Routes & Navigation
    • Routes can be created or imported directly in the app, for example from Komoot or GPX files.
    • The app shows your planned routes, lets you make changes and sends them straight to the device.
  3. Live tracking & Notifications
    • The live tracking feature lets you share your location in real time, which is useful for races or long rides.
    • Push notifications from your smartphone, such as incoming messages or calls, can be displayed on the Karoo 3 if desired.

What do you need the app for?

The app is  not essential for using the Hammerhead Karoo 3—the device works completely independently. However, it makes many things  more convenient:

  • Routes can be planned and transferred to the device more quickly.
  • Training data is immediately visible and can be exported.
  • It allows you to adjust settings while the Karoo is charging or at home, for example.
  • Live tracking provides extra safety on solo rides.

Verdict

In the  new Karoo 3 , our  Hammerhead Karoo 3 test  reveals a thoroughly refined, powerful GPS bike computer that holds its own against competitors from Garmin or Wahoo. In particular, the brilliant display, thoughtful software, improved battery life and strong connectivity make it a real recommendation for demanding riders.

The new Karoo 3 reviewed: our overall verdict

In our  Hammerhead Karoo 3 test , the device emerges as one of the best alternatives to the Garmin Edge 1050 or Wahoo Roam V3. 1.

      Benjamin
