Indoor trainer review

VAN RYSEL D100 indoor trainer review – a simple introduction to indoor training

Want to cycle at home in winter or bad weather but have never used an indoor trainer? In this review, I explain in simple terms what the VAN RYSEL D100 Trainer can do, who it suits and its everyday advantages and disadvantages, specifically for beginners with no previous experience.

Model: VAN RYSEL D100 interactive indoor trainer Ideal For: First Indoor Season & Beginners

Who Is the VAN RYSEL D100 Designed For?

The VAN RYSEL D100 is made for you if you are just starting out and simply want to ride at home without studying technology or training plans in depth. Perhaps you want to maintain fitness through winter, or need a practical way to ride after work without heading out in darkness or rain.

That is exactly where the D100 fits: a smart direct-drive trainer that does not overwhelm you with features. It connects to popular apps, shows your power in watts and lets you ride virtual routes without understanding every detail. Start small, build up gradually and get used to indoor training step by step.

Key point: The D100 is not a professional machine for huge power outputs, but a solid starting point for anyone wanting their first proper indoor setup.

How the D100 Works – Simply Explained

The D100 is a direct-drive indoor trainer. You remove the rear wheel from your road or gravel bike and mount the frame directly on the trainer. Your chain then runs over the D100's body rather than your rear wheel. This keeps the bike stable and provides a smooth ride, considerably more pleasant than basic wheel-on systems where the tyre runs against a roller.

Plug the trainer into a power socket and connect it to your smartphone, tablet or laptop using Bluetooth. In apps such as Zwift, MyWhoosh and Rouvy, the D100 appears as a power sensor. Select it and speed and power figures appear on screen from your first pedal strokes. No further setup is needed initially.

The package includes the Zwift Cog and Zwift Click. The Cog simplifies mounting your bike, while the Click is a small handlebar remote for controlling virtual gears in Zwift. This is particularly convenient for beginners because you do not constantly need to think about shifting, menus and settings.

Setup, space requirements and first ride

If you have never assembled an indoor trainer, the box and separate parts may initially look daunting. In practice, the D100 can be set up in a few clear steps. First, find a fixed location, ideally on a training mat or level floor. The trainer needs no more space than a bike standing upright, so it fits well in a living room, home office or small fitness area.

Then unfold the D100's feet, position it level and mount your bike using the correct adapters. Take your time and work step by step on the first attempt. Once the bike is correctly adjusted, mounting it next time becomes much quicker.

Next, plug in the trainer, open your app and pair the D100 over Bluetooth. A simple, flat route or beginner workout is enough for your first ride. Within minutes, you will get a feel for different efforts and how pleasant it is to ride at home when the weather outside is poor.

Everyday Riding Feel and Noise

What matters most in everyday use is the feel on the bike, rather than every technical detail. The VAN RYSEL D100 feels smooth and stable. Resistance is consistent and changes with the route or chosen workout: flat, uphill or downhill.

For noise, the D100 is within the usual range for a direct-drive trainer. You mainly hear the chain and a gentle whir. With a training mat underneath and some consideration for timing and neighbours, evening training is realistic without waking half the household. Families also benefit: anyone riding after putting the children to bed will appreciate that the trainer does not rumble loudly.

Advantages and disadvantages of the VAN RYSEL D100

To help you decide whether the D100 suits you, here are its main strengths and weaknesses from a beginner's perspective.

Assessment at a glance:
👍
Pros

The D100 is very beginner-friendly. Getting started with Zwift, MyWhoosh or Rouvy requires little technical frustration. Assemble, connect, choose a route and ride.

Direct drive makes the trainer smooth and stable. Your bike moves around less, you sit securely and can concentrate on pedalling and breathing.

Compared with many basic wheel-on systems, the D100 is pleasantly quiet. With a mat underneath, it is well suited to apartments and evening training.

👎
Cons

Maximum power and gradient are below top-level trainers. Very powerful riders or those seeking intense climbing simulation may be better served elsewhere.

As with all direct-drive trainers, you must remove the rear wheel. If you prefer not to work on your bike at all, this may initially feel unfamiliar.

The full experience generally requires an additional app. Many offer free versions or trials, but ongoing subscription costs may need to be included in your budget.

Training with Zwift, MyWhoosh and Rouvy

The D100's main appeal is bringing you into the world of virtual training platforms without being complicated itself. Zwift, MyWhoosh and Rouvy provide routes, workouts and training programmes particularly suitable for beginners. You can choose from ready-made sessions without writing your own plan.

Important: as supplied with Zwift Cog and Zwift Click, the package is primarily designed around Zwift in practice. Other platforms can also be used, but minor modifications may be necessary depending on the app. MyWhoosh is one example: switching to a conventional cassette may make sense so your drivetrain runs smoothly and shifting matches your bike.

Zwift itself is not free. Ongoing use requires a monthly subscription, for example around 19.99 € per month. The D100 therefore provides an affordable hardware starting point, but be aware of ongoing costs for Zwift and some other platforms. MyWhoosh currently advertises free use, although combining it with the D100 may require switching to a suitable cassette, as described.

You might begin with easy 20-minute rides and gradually build to 30–45 minutes, depending on what fits your routine. Your power figures show whether you are improving. This direct feedback makes indoor training considerably more motivating than simply pedalling with no target.

If you want more: TACX NEO 2T as a professional alternative

The VAN RYSEL D100 is probably the best and most affordable way to start indoor training, particularly for beginners. If you are already more advanced, train with a strong performance focus or simply want the full range of available technology, a dedicated professional-level trainer is worth considering.

For precisely that reason, I have already written a detailed article about the TACX NEO 2T. It operates in a different league: huge power reserves, finely controlled climbing and descending simulation, additional training features and an even more realistic overall ride. In short, it is a setup for anyone wanting professional-style indoor training.

If you are considering whether a long-term move from an entry-level trainer to a high-end model is worthwhile, find all the details here: Detailed TACX NEO 2T Review on Rennradguru.de .

Frequently Asked Questions About the D100 for Beginners

Is the D100 Enough for Two or Three Sessions a Week?

Yes. It is designed for exactly that use. Riding for 30–60 minutes two or three times weekly can maintain your fitness and gradually improve it. If weather or everyday commitments often stop you riding, the D100 particularly helps you make the most of your available time.

Do I need a separate room?

No. A small area in the living room, home office or hallway is enough. The important points are a stable trainer and enough room to get on and off safely. A mat underneath protects the floor and reduces noise.

Can someone who is not tech-savvy manage the D100?

Yes. If you can use a smartphone, tablet or laptop, you can also set up the D100 with a little patience. Initial assembly takes some time, but afterwards the routine is simply: turn on the trainer, mount the bike, open the app and ride.

Conclusion: Who Is the VAN RYSEL D100 Trainer Worthwhile For?

The VAN RYSEL D100 Trainer is a well-balanced choice for anyone wanting a straightforward introduction to indoor training. It combines a smooth ride with the ability to start using Zwift, MyWhoosh or Rouvy directly, without overwhelming you with technology.

If you are already very powerful, love steep climbing simulations and train close to your limits at very high wattages, you will probably choose a more expensive model. But if your aim is “stay fit, stay consistent and finally have a well-planned indoor setup”, the D100 fits very well.

In summary, the VAN RYSEL D100 is a sensible, pleasantly simple introduction to indoor training, particularly for people who like things straightforward but still want a capable smart trainer beneath them.

      Benjamin
