Detailed comparison: display, battery, navigation and training
▣ Display & Readability
At 3.8 inches, the ELEMNT ACE has the larger display area. Maps, elevation profiles and numerous data fields therefore have plenty of room. The Edge 1050 is slightly more compact at 3.5 inches but offers higher vertical resolution at 480 × 800 pixels and likewise a very clear display.
▱ Battery life
In normal use, the ACE's up to 30 hours is ahead of the Edge 1050's up to 20 hours. Garmin, however, offers a power-saving mode with up to 60 hours. For long rides without heavily reducing the display, the ACE is particularly attractive; for maximum emergency reserve, the Edge has an advantage.
⌖ Navigation
The ACE focuses on a clear map view, on-device route planning, automatic rerouting and voice-assisted turn instructions. Garmin also offers extensive navigation and adds many map, ClimbPro and route features. The ACE feels simpler, while the Edge has broader functionality.
♙ Training & Features
The Edge 1050 wins for training status, load analysis, Stamina, Power Guide, daily suggested workouts, GroupRide and Garmin Connect analysis. The ACE clearly displays performance data and structured workouts but does not reach the same depth.
✥ Controls
Both devices combine a touchscreen and buttons. Wahoo deliberately keeps menus and the Ready-to-Ride dashboard clear. Garmin offers more settings and features but therefore takes slightly more time to learn.
⚖ Weight & Size
At 208 grams, the ACE is significantly heavier and wider. The Edge 1050 weighs 161 grams and is narrower. Both are large bike computers, but Garmin looks less bulky on a sporty road bike.
€ Value for money
The ACE is often cheaper and offers a larger display, longer standard battery life and the wind sensor. The Edge 1050's extra cost mainly pays for the more comprehensive training and safety ecosystem.
Frequently asked questions about Wahoo ELEMNT ACE vs Garmin Edge 1050
Which bike computer navigates better?
Both navigate very well. The ACE impresses with a large map view, simple operation and voice guidance. The Edge 1050 offers more additional map, climbing and route features. The better choice therefore depends on whether simplicity or functionality matters more.
Which battery lasts longer?
In normal use, the ELEMNT ACE lasts longer at up to 30 hours than the Edge 1050 at up to 20 hours. However, up to 60 hours is possible in Garmin's power-saving mode.
Is the ACE's wind sensor a reason to buy it?
The sensor provides interesting real-time and post-ride data on headwinds, tailwinds and drafting. For many riders, it is an extra rather than a sole reason to buy; for aero and position analysis, however, it can add real value.
Which is better for training?
The Edge 1050. Garmin offers deeper training analysis, more performance metrics and more comprehensive Garmin Connect analysis. Nevertheless, the ACE is easily sufficient for structured workouts and conventional performance data.
Which is more practical in rain and with gloves?
Both have IPX7 protection and physical buttons in addition to the touchscreen. This allows key functions to be operated in wet conditions or with gloves.
