Benjamin from Rennradguru by Benjamin • Updated on 31 July 2026

Hammerhead Karoo 3 or Garmin Edge 850? The current Karoo is officially called simply Hammerhead Karoo but, as the third generation, is often called Karoo 3. It scores points for its larger, high-resolution display, very direct map controls and deep SRAM AXS integration. The Edge 850 is more compact and offers more comprehensive training, safety and Garmin Connect features. I have personally tested both bike computers and show you which model better suits your needs.

Brief verdict

For data-focused training and existing Garmin users, the Edge 850 is the more rounded choice. The Hammerhead Karoo is particularly worthwhile if a larger display, modern map view, fast rerouting and close SRAM AXS integration matter more to you. For navigation and interface, the Karoo feels particularly smartphone-like; Garmin wins on overall functionality.

Detailed comparison

▣ Display & Operation

At 3.2 inches, the Karoo offers visibly more area and a higher resolution of 480 × 800 pixels. Maps, charts and data fields therefore look particularly modern. The Edge 850 is smaller and lighter but remains sharp and also combines its touchscreen with very comprehensive button controls. Both can be operated entirely through hardware buttons in rain or with gloves.

▱ Battery life

Garmin specifies up to 12 hours with intensive use and up to 36 hours in power-saving mode. Hammerhead lists over 15 hours in standard use, over 30 hours in power-saving mode and over 35 hours with extended power-saving measures for the Karoo. In normal use, the Karoo has more reserve; with consistent power saving, the two are closer.

⌖ Navigation

Both offer multi-band GNSS, offline maps, turn instructions and automatic rerouting. The Karoo feels particularly smartphone-like when panning, zooming and exploring the map. Garmin, meanwhile, offers many navigation options, Trailforks data and close Garmin Connect integration. I see the Karoo ahead for spontaneous map interaction; their overall navigation functionality is very closely matched.

♙ Training & Data analysis

The Edge 850 offers training status, Stamina, Power Guide, daily suggested workouts, Cycling Dynamics and other Garmin metrics. The Karoo displays performance data and workouts very attractively and is highly customisable but does not reach the same depth in training readiness, load management or long-term analysis.

⚙ SRAM AXS & Sensors

Both connect through ANT+ and Bluetooth to power meters, heart rate sensors, radar, lights, speed and cadence. The Karoo, however, has particularly deep SRAM AXS integration: AXS components can pair automatically, battery levels can be displayed in detail and compatible controllers can be configured to operate the Karoo.

€ Value for money

The Karoo is often slightly cheaper at retailers and offers a larger display, 64 GB storage and strong navigation. The Edge 850 mainly justifies its extra cost through more comprehensive training, safety and Garmin Connect features. Better value therefore depends heavily on whether you prioritise navigation or training analysis.
